Mouthpieces various

There is no value in knowledge unless it is put into practice. And this is exactly our experience! Having over 20 years of experience in mouthpieces, we gathered knowledge and came up with a mouthpiece which aims to satisfy the needs of most brass musicians. The combination of engineering principles together with different mouthpiece experiences, led to the creation of a range of mouthpieces with one aim; that of giving a totally new and positive experience to the brass player in terms of comfortability, effort and tone quality. The K&G mouthpiece features a number of innovations and improvements which help musicians during performance. These features are incorporated in all the parts of the mouthpiece including the rim, the cup, the shoulder, the throat and the backbore.

1. The rim

The K&G mouthpiece features a very comfortable rim which you can immediately notice the positive difference after you try them out. The rim contour, the rim width and the inner bite were designed in a way to maximize the efficiency of the mouthpiece.

1.1. The rim contour

The K&G Mouthpiece features a rim contour that can be considered as round enough to give you comfortability and flexibility, however, flat enough to provide adequate support to your lips. Support will maximize endurance, security as well as control.

1.2. The rim width

The K&G Mouthpiece features a medium-wide rim. Such a rim is considered to be balanced. It offers the best of both worlds; narrow enough maximize ability in intervals and flexibilities, however wide enough to increase endurance and reduce fatigue.

1.3. The rim bite

Besides the rim contour and width, what makes our mouthpiece more unique is the design of the rim bite. Following theories and trials, the K&G mouthpiece features a moderately sharp rim bite. Such a bite will assist you in precise attacks and better grip. The bite is smoothly rounded such that it allows enough rooming for the lips to vibrate with ease and with minimal pressure. Special ratios have proven to work with us and will surely satisfy your needs.

1.4. The rim inside diameter

The range of inside diameters is aimed to satisfy all musicians. The range varies from 24.75mm to 28.4mm, depending on the range. Before jumping to conclusions, we can help you in choosing the most appropriate inside diameter for your needs. We are always here to help you and give you a professional advice.

1.5. The rim profile

The K&G Mouthpiece offers an added benefit to the musician; that of keeping the same rim profile for various cups and instruments ranging from trombones to euphoniums and baritones.

2. The cup

The K&G mouthpieces feature an innovative cup design. This cup is characterized by a number of curves leading from one to another in such a way that maximizes the efficiency of the airflow. Depending on the instrument, our cups vary from shallow to extremely deep to give you the possibility to vary your tone depending on the occasion.

3. The shoulder

The shoulder was designed in such a way that the air stream flowing from the cup into the throat is not hindered in any way, thus balancing the total efficiency of the mouthpiece

4. The throat

Using fluid engineering principles, the throat of each K&G mouthpiece was designed specifically to complement the cup, being shallow, medium, medium deep, deep, very deep or extremely deep. The K&G mouthpieces are designed in such a way that the throat provides optimal resistance in order to enhance richness of sound, flexibility in playing and centering of notes.

5. The backbore

Experiments were carried out using different types of backbores which vary in their taper. The K&G mouthpiece has a specific backbore that compliments the overall mouthpiece in such a way that intonation, sound and focusing are optimized. This backbore also enriches the sound in terms of overtones. Overtones must be controlled; excessive overtones will result in confusion in articulation especially when playing fast passages. On the other hand, the optimum amount of overtones make the sound more colourful. The backbore was chosen on the basis that it also compliments both the player and the instrument. The K&G mouthpiece has a specific backbore design for baritone and euphonium, however, a different backbore was adopted for the trombone.
